Girls, pumpkin season is here, and what better way to create than carving your own unique designs on said pumpkin? If you’re reading this, you probably are like too many, not knowing where to start with your pumpkin and feeling overwhelmed by the craft that’s weirdly competitive.
I’m here to tell you that it’s supposed to be fun, and with a few images of inspiration and how to pick your pumpkin and the history of pumpkins, your journey will run a lot smoother.
So girls, if you’re a little weird and are looking for creative ideas to decorate pumpkins, you’ve come to the right place. We all know pumpkin carving can be somewhat intimidating, so I’ve created a small guide on how to cut and decorate said pumpkins.
How to carve pumpkins as a beginner:
Cut off the top of your pumpkin with a large serrated knife.
Scoop out the gunk inside.
You can use this to make your own soup.
With a Sharpie, trace your design on paper.
If you’re a pro artist, you can just wing it using a serrated knife and carefully cut along the lines.
A tip is to take your time and not rush the process.
If you make a mistake, girl, it adds to the beauty, trust me.
History of pumpkins
Before we begin, let’s get familiar with the fall mascot, aka pumpkins. Everything you need to know about this spooky decoration. Girls, before pumpkins were the girls of fall, they had a slightly weird history. Pumpkins are part of the squash family and originated in the Americas. Evidence shows people in Mexico were found cultivating squash thousands of years ago. For indigenous communities across the Americas, pumpkins were the most valuable crop. Not only could they be eaten, but they could be stored.
Girls, pumpkins literally fed families, so why not honour this sacred food? The origins of jack-o’-lanterns: guys, prepare for the same spookiness, because this is about to get spooky. Are you ready, girl? Let’s get into this weird history of jack-o’-lanterns.
History of jack o lanterns
The tradition of carving motifs into jack-o’-lanterns originated in my place, aka Ireland. So I might be able to give you some insider information and history you might not know that’s word of mouth. Basically, before pumpkins became the norm, people in Ireland carved turnips and other root vegetables into lanterns.
These were used basically to scare off passersby or intruders who would pass on their land. Similar to today, they had frightening faces carved into them.
A famous story or folktale that was passed down among our people was the legend of Stingy Jack. According to the folklore, Jack was a master trickster who even managed to outwit the devil and hell. Ultimately, he was stuck in a purgatory-type situation.
He was condemned to wander inside vegetables in the world instead of going to heaven or hell. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought this tradition to North America, and the rest is history.
Different types of pumpkins
girls, there are so many options when it comes to choosing your pumpkins. Below I’ve written about different types of pumpkins:
Classic orange pumpkin.
These are the basic girls of pumpkins. They do the job, but they aren’t unique, and girls, we’re better than that.
Sugar pumpkins:
think smaller and sweeter, and the carving pumpkins, great for baking.
White pumpkins:
these are for the minimal girlies. If you’re a neutral baddie, this could be the one for you. Mini pumpkins are so darling. They’re perfect for bedroom decor and DIY projects.
Warty pumpkins
They aren’t the cutest, but they’re definitely the weirdest, with their bumpy, odd texture.
So, now we know everything there is to know about jack-o’-lanterns and pumpkins; let’s get into the fun part, aka the inspiration and ideas.
Piranha jack-o’-lantern
Now let’s get weird. To recreate this pumpkin, add fins, large teeth, and eyes to a pumpkin.

Nerdy pumpkin jack-o’-lantern
If you want to pay homage to your teenage self, this might be the jack-o’-lantern for you.
To recreate this design, carve out five teeth shapes and add can caps to the teeth to create this effect of braces, add eyes, and you will be looking, it will be like looking at a mirror of your past self.

Spirals and star pumpkin
This pumpkin has an aesthetic of whimsy goth all over it, and I’m honestly obsessed with recreating this star.
Start by cutting out a straight line that’s slightly diagonal and another line that meets in the middle. Repeat this until you form a triangle
shape, and then repeat until you form a star. For the spirals, draw a curved, tree-like structure instead of one that goes straight or branches out.

Half crescent moon design
To create a crescent moon design, draw a C and then flesh it out, adding a nose, a mouth, and adding the same method as described above for the stars.

Mushroom pumpkin jack-o’-lantern
If you’re a certified cottagecore girl, this might be for you. To recreate the mushroom design, start with a rounded triangle for the top, add a slightly wavy triangle for the bottom, add a slightly wavy rectangle for the bottom, and add circles for the white on top of the pumpkin. Repeat this until you get your desired design.

Forest creatures jack-o’-lantern
To recreate this design, add a tree, mushroom, snail, a dragonfly, and plants. To recreate a snail, add a semicircle for the shell and a rectangle shape that joins in the middle. Add tiny rounded triangles on the top and for the ears.

Firefly jack-o’-lanterns
This is for the Lorelai Gilmore girls that are, the girls that get it, the girls that don’t, don’t. So what I’m saying to recreate the dragonfly shape: add a large narrow rectangle with a semicircle on top, add four wing shapes that are divided up for a stained glass effect.

Tinkerbell jack-o’-lantern
She’s brave, she’s strong, and she’s iconic. I’m only talking about the one and only Tinkerbell from Peter Pan. To recreate this pumpkin, begin by tracing a silhouette of Tinkerbell, add a spiral of fairy dust with a number of dots emerging from her wings into a spiral.

The sun pattern jack-o’-lantern
If you’re a fan of Disney’s Rapunzel, this design might be the one for you. To recreate this design, start by carving a large circle in the center of the pumpkin, add seven flame-like shapes for the beams of the sun, and add five smaller ones; alternate between the two; add larger ones and smaller ones, and add spirals with dots emerging around the sun. And warning: this might attract Mother Gothel.

Beauty and the Beast jack-o’-lantern
girls. I’m in awe of this design, and it’s giving ethereal princess vibes. To recreate this design, you want to divide it into smaller sections of rectangles for everything, even the rose, to create a stained-glass effect.

Ferris wheel jack-o’-lantern

This design is for the crybaby Melanie Martinez fans. To recreate this pumpkin, carve out three horse shapes that connect with a large thin rectangle shape and a longer shape, and add triangle shapes to the top, and you’re golden.
Hocus Pocus-inspired jack-o’-lantern
girls. If you’re a witchy girl, this might just be for you. Or if you simply love the nostalgia of Hocus Pocus, this design is perfect for you. To recreate this design, carve out the silhouettes of three women with their hands up.

Taylor Swift folklore inspired design
Swifties, this one is for us. So crank up August and get carving. All you need to recreate this is to carve out the lettering of folklore and add stars around it, and you’re golden.

Disney’s Up jack-o’-lantern
If you grew up in the early 2000s, this design should bring you a wave of nostalgia. To recreate this design, add many egg shapes for the balloons, and add a rectangle connected to two triangles for the house.

Starbucks jack-o’-lantern
If you’re partial to your daily matcha at Starbucks, this design might be for you. To recreate this design, trace the iconic woman figure logo, and you’re set.

Luke from Gilmore Girls, jack-o’-lantern
girls. If you’re a Stars Hollow fan, this is the one for you to recreate. Add the text Luke’s inside a coffee shape, and you’re golden.

Conclusion
If you’ve made it this fair in the age of ai I really appreciate your support.
