Summer is here, alas, the time of year we’ve all been waiting for.
But for some of us, summer means different things. Perhaps it’s a time of year again when your kids are home from school, and you need something to do to entertain them that is not childish, that you can also take part in.
That is where ceramic painting ideas come in. This post can help you figure out what to paint on ceramics. Because let’s be honest, if you’re on Google or simply on Pinterest, there are so many options, but rarely is there a place where they’re categorized and all together.
That is why I wrote this blog post that includes so many ceramic painting ideas that are both stunning and whimsical. These ideas, when done right, will become an art piece in your home that everyone will compliment you on, or simply a family heirloom that passed down for generations.
So without further ado, let’s get into the good stuff, aka the ceramic painting ideas.
Strawberry mug ceramic painting idea
There is something so sweet about adding strawberries to your clay pieces. They’re cute, playful, and aesthetic. To create strawberry shapes, start with a triangle shape that’s rounded at the top. Add seed shapes with a lighter color for the stem. Paint squiggly lines in green and vertical small lines for the top of the stem.
Repeat this for the entire mug, allowing for equal space between the strawberries. A tip for creating patterns like this is to paint an odd number, for example instead of six strawberries, paint seven.
To make this design even more whimsical, add different colors to the handle and top and the rims of the mug.

Whimsical moon ceramic painting idea
Moons are so mystical, so why not paint them on a ceramic plate? All you need for this design is six colours: blue, yellow, white, black, pink, and red.
Begin by painting the plate in a light blue shade. Add white to the centre to create the moon.
Add black to create the facial features of the moon, and add pink for the cheeks and red for the lips to outline. Finally, yellow for the tiny stars around the moon. An artist’s tip for creating stars is to draw a small plus sign first and then X over it, and there you have the perfect witchy dish for your next girl dinner.

Apple plate ceramic design
Since Charlie XCX’s new song Apple, the apple motif has been everywhere, and I mean, I’m not mad about it. I mean, just look at how cute this plate is. To create this plate, you’ll need a few paint colours: red paint, cream, orange, and blue.
To begin the apple, start with a heart shape, but instead of connecting the ends, there should be two intersections, the top one slightly bigger than the bottom. Add lines down the middle of the burn in brown, dark brown, and then a seed-like shape at each side of the apple. Paint a red border for the apple, and use brown and cream for the stem.
Paint the background blue and add red and orange to create the star pattern around it. Add dots around the perimeter of the orange stars beside the apple should be created there. There you have it, the most whimsical apple you’ve ever seen.

Cherry pie ceramic design
As we near the 4th of July, a nice idea to make Americana tableware.
I love the idea of painting an American cherry pie on a plate, as it’s not in your face, but it’s still patriotic enough for the 4th of July.
All you need is four colours and some creative flair. Start with five diagonal lines in one direction and then repeat. Then create a diamond shape for the filling of the pie. Add a cute border, and there you have an original festive design for the 4th of July.

Silly sardine ceramic painting
If you’ve been to any interior design store recently, you will notice there are so many designs of sardine fish on every other aisle. But oftentimes they look unfinished or machine-produced and lack that human touch that only a human can bring.
So if you’re anything like me and have a can-do attitude, then you might be able to create this design at home. To paint the sardine, start with a rectangle shape that’s rounded at both sides, with one top side sharper to represent the fish’s mouth. Add sharp half-triangles for the fins and add a little whimsical touch add some mark-making on the fish, giving it a unique effect.
To create marks on the fish, basically just follow your intuition. Alternatively, you could paint diagonal stripes and dots.
This design would work perfectly as a set of trendy dishes or on its own. It serves as a reminder that you can easily create something you saw in the store at home.

Discoball ceramic plate
If you’re looking for a design that you can paint at home, this is the one. Not only is it perfect for a night 70s baby, but it is also great for a Taylor Swift lover whose favorite song is Mirror ball.
All you need to do is paint the design is to paint many square stripes, but instead of straight lines, you paint them in the shape of a smiley face, meaning the squares begin higher up and when you reach the center, there’s slightly, there’s a slight dip, and they rise to the same point they were originally at when you reach past the center.
So two higher-up pieces and then one slightly dipped to create an illusion of a smiley face. This gives the illusion of a 3D circle. Repeat this as many times as it takes to get to the end of the circle. There you have the perfect Swifty gift idea.

Ceramic Girly coffee lover design
Nothing is quite as nice as drinking a coffee out of your favourite mug, or maybe there’s something even better. Perhaps if you made the mug, that would be better. The only thing I can think of is if you made it your own mug. This travel mug is perfect for all coffee lovers. All you need to do this is to paint six vertical stripes in two different colours with acrylic paint markers and the text to create the text, more espresso, less depresso in block capitals. Add heart decals to spice up the mug all over the design.

This ceramic painting idea is perfect to display your freshly grown fruit or even a homemade pizza. All you need to paint your design is to paint the inside of the design red and the rim of it in vertical green stripes in two varying shades, and then create seeds on the red area with black paint. There you have it, the perfect summer design that’s so effortlessly cute.

Ceramic Sheep in a field design
There’s something so nostalgic about painting where you grew up. For myself, I grew up in rural Ireland surrounded by sheep and fields of green. Perhaps that’s why this design is my favourite, as it speaks to my inner child. To recreate this design, paint five arches in green to represent fields, add black circles for the sheep’s head, and a fuzzy cloud shape for the body. Continue painting as many sheep as your heart desires. For the sky, simply paint the top of the ceramic blue.

Ceramic arched doll house
Magical is what comes to mind when I see this ceramic painting idea. So why not create your own dollhouse with clay? The concept is that you use clay to make your favourite room in your house. If you love this idea, this will make a lovely gift. Or simply a trinket holder for your favourite labubu’s or sunny angels.

Ceramic letter holder painting idea
These letter holders are both practical and cottagecore. All you need to create this design, other than paint, is clay and decoupage paper. The secret to getting flawless decoupage designs is patience and allowing time to apply your glue in thin layers and leave plenty of time between each layer for them to dry and then the finished coat, the ceramic in resin, Mod Podge for that extra polished look.

Girl dinner ceramic plate
Girl dinner has been all over everyone’s FYP. The concept of girl dinner fascinates me, but I can’t really fully grasp what it means. This ceramic design is perfect for you if you’re obsessed with this girl dinner inside joke. The cherry designs also add so much cocktail vibes to this design with their effortless brush strokes and cute detail. This is a great option for beginners or cherry lovers.

Silly goose plate design
If I were to describe adorable in a plate design, this would be it. Everyone loves an animal design, so why not paint a silly goose? Start with simple shapes like an oval for the body and a long, curved line for the neck. Once you have the basic shape, add the beak, wings, and webbed feet.
