It’s that time of year again when we have the opportunity to showcase our patriotism by baking.
As we celebrate the birthday of the United States, we also remember those who have died fighting for freedom.
With that being said, it can be stressful, as we rush around trying to impress our guests and make their day special. So if your felling a little overwhelmed, I’ve made this list of dessert ideas in the hopes that it will make us all feel a bit more on top of our baking game.
All bake goods are inspired by the colors in the American flag: red, white, and blue.
Without further ado, let’s get baking.
Ingredients that most of these desserts have
- Sprinkles in red, white, and blue.
- White star sprinkles
- Vanilla buttercream frosting
- Pretzels
- 4th of July M&M’s
- Strawberries
- White chocolate
- Lollipop sticks
How do I make the perfect buttercream frosting that doesn’t taste lumpy ?
To begin, add softened butter and beat until light and creamy.
Make sure the butter is at room temperature, as using butter that is too soft will make the icing runny. Sift the powdered sugar slowly until done. Fold the mixture until combined, ensuring there are no lumps. Do not over-mix it as the mixture will become liquid.
Chocolate strawberries with a twist
Chocolate strawberries are a fan favourite for a reason: they have the perfect balance of juiciness and sweetness.
The top tip to make chocolate-covered strawberries is to use a double boiler that chefs use to melt chocolate. You’ll need a bowl and a pot of the same size to achieve the double boiler. The double boiler is far more effective at melting chocolate than melting it in the microwave.

American flag brownies
Brownies are always a crowd pleaser when done right. For this design, you’ll need a piping bag with a small nib, icing in 3 colors, and star-shaped sprinkles.
The trick to getting the perfect brownies is temperature control. This means don’t overbake them, as brownies continue to cook when they’re still hot out of the oven.
For a meringue-like crispy top layer, whisk the sugar and eggs until fluffy. There you have it, the perfect brownies.

American flags soft serve mini cakes
Soft serve mini cakes are a perfect choice for guests who love a more traditional dessert. As desserts go, they’re pretty straightforward. You begin by baking a large rectangular cake and dividing it into small rectangular pieces, depending on the size of your container.
The icing is where the magic happens. To make a classic cream cheese icing, add cream cheese and icing sugar.
The biggest secret to making the texture of the icing fluffy is not to overmix it, as the friction of the whisk will melt the cream cheese, making it more liquid in texture.

Patriotic rice crispy cakes
There’s something about Rice Crispies that kids just love, maybe it’s the gooey marshmallows or the crunch. These patriotic Rice Crispies are sure to impress a large crowd.
A pro tip on how to make them the perfect texture is to add more marshmallows than you think. This gives the rice crispies that chewy texture we love.

Classic vanilla cupcakes with a twist
You can’t go wrong with a classic vanilla cupcake; it’s traditional, and everyone loves them regardless of age. A tip for making cupcakes with the perfect shape is not to overmix them.
Once you mix the flour, you should stop. This goes against everything our home economics teachers taught us about baking.
There is a scientific reason why over-mixing makes the cupcakes denser, as it stimulates gluten growth. When you have less gluten, your cupcakes will be much more like cakes than bread, as the more gluten you have, the more chewy the dough becomes.

You can’t go wrong with a cheesecake, especially on the 4th of July.

Since then, they have improved and come a long way. For this dessert, you’ll need to bake a sheet cake and mix it with vanilla frosting before rolling it into a ball.
For each scoop of ice cream, you need one ball of ice cream, and each ball should be a different color. Add frosting and a cone to the bottom, and there you have it, patriotic ice-cream cake pops.

This is by far the easiest dessert idea; all you need is icing, food coloring, lollipop sticks, and Oreo cookies.
